Busitema University Library Partners with Lecturio to Strengthen Competence-Based Learning

In a bold move to bridge the gap between limited physical and digital collections and the growing demand for quality health sciences education, the Busitema University Library is proud to announce a strategic collaboration with Lecturio, a globally recognized EdTech leader recently ranked twenty-third among the world’s top education technology companies by TIME Magazine and Statista. This partnership marks a significant milestone in the university’s journey toward implementing Competence-Based Education (CBE) and supporting Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) within the health sciences.

Lecturio is a next-generation digital healthcare learning and teaching platform designed to align perfectly with Competence-Based Education and TVET training models. Unlike traditional resources that emphasize rote memorization, Lecturio focuses on the mastery of specific, measurable competencies required for effective healthcare practice. The platform offers high-yield video lectures delivered by expert educators, breaking down complex medical concepts into manageable, skill-oriented modules that allow students to progress at their own pace. Integrated quiz banks with board-style questions enable learners to demonstrate competence through repeated testing and feedback, a core principle of CBE. Furthermore, artificial intelligence-supported learning tools adapt to individual student performance, identifying gaps in knowledge and recommending targeted content to ensure that each learner achieves the required competencies before moving forward.

For Busitema University, where digital and physical collections have faced limitations in meeting the needs of a growing student population, Lecturio serves as a powerful enhancement to the library’s digital collection. By subscribing to this platform, the university effectively augments its existing resources with thousands of up-to-date, evidence-based learning materials without the constraints of physical shelf space or limited print copies. This digital expansion ensures that all students, whether on campus or studying remotely, have equitable access to world-class medical education content, thereby strengthening the university’s capacity to deliver quality training under the CBE and TVET frameworks.

Recognizing the importance of proper orientation for any new resource, the University Librarian, Dr. Fredrick Kiwuwa Lugya, has been in close consultation with Ms. Glorious Assiimwe, the Campus Librarian for the Health Sciences Library, to explore the best ways to introduce Lecturio to the university community. Following their discussions, it has been agreed that a virtual training workshop will be organized to familiarize academic staff and students with the platform’s features and its alignment with the competence-based curriculum. The training is scheduled for Tuesday of the upcoming week from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Uganda time, a time slot carefully chosen to ensure high attendance from both faculty and learners. The session will be structured within the familiar framework of the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Journal Workshop model, providing a comfortable and productive environment for all participants.

One of the most significant challenges facing many universities in Uganda, including Busitema, is the limitation of physical library collections and the high cost of acquiring sufficient print materials for large cohorts of students. Lecturio directly addresses this challenge by serving as a robust digital collection that grows with the needs of the institution. Instead of relying solely on a few copies of expensive textbooks, students and staff can draw upon an expansive repository of video lectures, quiz banks, and interactive learning tools that are continuously updated to reflect current medical knowledge and practices. This enhancement of the digital collection not only saves physical space but also ensures that every student, from undergraduate to graduate level, has equal opportunity to access high-quality learning materials anytime and anywhere with an internet connection. For TVET training in particular, where practical competencies are paramount, Lecturio’s visual and interactive content provides an invaluable supplement to hands-on instruction.

Looking beyond the initial introduction, Dr. Fredrick Kiwuwa Lugya expressed his enthusiasm for the long-term potential of this collaboration. He noted that the university is not merely acquiring a new database but is actively building what has been termed the Busitema Digital Health Teaching Academy. This initiative will involve curriculum mapping, course integration, and the potential use of Lecturio as a primary Learning Management System tailored to the university’s specific competence-based requirements. Prof. Dr. Lutz Mükke, Director of Institutional Partnerships Africa at Lecturio, added that his organization is delighted to support Busitema University’s digital development. He further explained that Lecturio’s artificial intelligence-supported tools and customizable content are designed to meet the specific requirements of African institutions, and he looks forward to a long-term and fruitful partnership.

Beyond the pilot and training phases, Lecturio has proposed hosting a select team of four to five Busitema staff members for a workshop at their headquarters in Leipzig, Germany. This visit would include visa support, programme coordination, platform demonstrations, academic exchange, assistance with local logistics planning, and a cultural programme. Such an opportunity would further strengthen the university’s capacity to implement Competence-Based Education and TVET training effectively.

Academic staff and students are encouraged to mark their calendars for the upcoming training session on Tuesday of the upcoming week from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM Uganda time. Further details about the session will be communicated through official library channels. For more information about Lecturio and how it will enhance the university’s digital collection in support of competence-based learning, community members are encouraged to visit the Busitema University Library website or contact the Health Sciences Library directly. The library remains committed to providing innovative resources that empower students and faculty to achieve excellence in health sciences education.
